Imagine billions of fibers scattered all across the environment ruining it yet we can barely even see them or stop them from spreading as we all let them off every where and is extremely hard to stop them falling.
The pollution of fresh water because of plastic is a fast growing issue and the cleaning of your clothing using fresh water isn't very good as it lets off micro-plastic fibers,
micro-plastic fibers are fragments less than 1 mm in size; they come from polyester, acrylic, polypropylene, polyethylene and poly amide fibers. Your jackets and shirts made of so can let out micro-plastic fibers when you wash them. It is particularly bad when the fibers reach the water as they are extremely harmful towards the ocean and the creatures within it. The waste water from the washing machines containing the plastic fibers usually ends up going down the drain and into our waters which is a terrible thing as there is so much of it.
Given the global extent of the problem, and the lack of knowledge about
the impact of micro-plastics on animals in the food chain, designers of clothing and washing machines should consider the need to reduce the release of fibers into waste water. In addition, methods to remove micro-plastic from sewage, such as ultra filtration, should be considered by the companies.
